  1. What I noticed first about this photo is the tough looks on the faces. Were they mad at having their photos taken? And their big legs. After that I spent some time looking at the faces more closely.

  2. I first noticed how short the dresses were...They probably were tired. Working, worry, school work, difficult teacher, demanding principal, contending with the relatives they lived with, and dealing with complaining parents probably took the joy out of what they had accomplished.

  3. Like you, my first reaction to this photo was surprise about how short dresses were in 1931. It's amazing how quickly styles apparently changed in the early part of the 20th century from skirts that went to the ankles to dresses above the knees.
