Speaking with relatives about family history, I am often told to keep this piece of information between you, me and the gate post. Respecting sensibilities, I will share my family stories entwine with historical events from Copiah, Jefferson and Lincoln Counties, Mississippi, from gate post to gate post.

I'm not sure what I would have noticed about the picture if the post title hadn't directed my attention. But I'm glad that you got me to focus on the hats. Hats must have been really popular back then. What an amazing variety!
The hats, the faces - great photo. and is that man carrying a hat box?
Hats likely were a necessity, used to keep warm.
I initially thought he was carrying a cake but you may be right. He is not handling the box delicately enough for it to be a cake.
