Speaking with relatives about family history, I am often told to keep this piece of information between you, me and the gate post. Respecting sensibilities, I will share my family stories entwine with historical events from Copiah, Jefferson and Lincoln Counties, Mississippi, from gate post to gate post.
Thanks for posting the photo of Robert H. Stewart Furniture. Can the Robert Stewart Photograph Collection be viewed online? Robert Hill Stewart owned Elder Grove Plantation, Bunch's Bend, Louisiana where some of my ancestors had been slaves. I suspect it was at Robert H. Stewart's that my great great grandfather Jacob Stewart was born in Natchez. Robert Hill Stewart was a furniture maker and mortician. I have copies of receipts for the building of coffins and the burial of slaves. Robert H's parents were Robert Stewart and Susan McDonald Marschalk daughter of Andrew Marschalk, editor and printer in Natchez. Source: Robert H. Stewart Account Books, Mss. 404, 4732, Louisiana and Lower Mississippi Valley Collections, LSU Libraries, Baton Rouge, La.
Ed, Thank you for the information concerning Robert H Stewart. The African Americans photographed near and in front of his store may have a relationship with the Stewart family.

ReplyDeleteShe's the queen of this wagon.
DeleteHope they owned their own land and didn't get cheated on their cotton.
ReplyDeleteSince Natchez had many merchants to do business with, Hands on Hips probably choose one she thought was fair to Negroes.
