Speaking with relatives about family history, I am often told to keep this piece of information between you, me and the gate post. Respecting sensibilities, I will share my family stories entwine with historical events from Copiah, Jefferson and Lincoln Counties, Mississippi, from gate post to gate post.

Old Country Store
Learned, Mississippi
Learned, Mississippi
Last summer, the husband and I were out for a leisure drive. We saw a street sign that read Learned. Neither one of us had been there before, so, we decided to take the road never traveled and came upon this store in a small Mayberry-ish like village. I believe the faded sign above the store reads Gibbs and Sons. The store was built in 1892 and is located in Learned, Hinds County, Mississippi. It is about 20 miles west of Jackson.
Nice photographs!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Suzassippi.
DeleteWOW, you stepped back in time!!
ReplyDeleteIt is back in time. I thought I could hear wagon wheels and horse hoofs.
DeleteAmazing - You don't find many country stores! I see china and hat boxes! Lord I'd love at that store. Maybe next week when I'm in MS!
ReplyDeleteIf you time your visit, maybe you will get to enjoy lunch with the locals.
DeleteAwesome find!
ReplyDeleteThis store is in my "backyard" and I had no idea it was there.
DeleteIt looks like a store on a notecard I have from long ago. If those walls could talk.
ReplyDeleteThe conversations would probably be entertaining and hurtful,
DeleteGreat place. Have been there many times over the years. A wonder you got some photos as they are usually upset with people taking photos inside.
ReplyDeleteMy husband and I were the only two customers at the time of our visit. The woman who served our food and another younger woman remained in the back. I think I was finishing with the last one by the time they realized I was taking pictures, and I realized this was not the brightest of ideas.
DeleteI work at the MS Archives and we recently received some store and church ledgers from this area. I zoomed in on the sign and it says Gibbes & Sons, which correlates with the Gibbes name from some correspondence that came with the ledgers. :)
ReplyDeleteWell... EaT thaR din!
