Miss Bobby Socks

This photograph was made for Robert Dixon June 8, 1946, somewhere in Lincoln County, Mississippi, or a surrounding county. The lady is unknown to me.

  1. How interesting! A mystery lady! Wonder why she was wearing a jacket if it was June. Maybe she didn't like the outfit that went with the bobby socks?

    1. The date is a transcriber's mistake was my first thought but her shoes are not for cold weather so maybe the coat is a prop. I like your guess better.

  3. Cuz Linda, love the picture, especially the shoes. Shows this lady has a bit of style minus the socks of course. Thanks of sharing.

    1. I love the up do hairstyle. Every strain of hair is in place. I wonder if she did it herself or had a friend or hair stylist do it.

  4. That was shortly after the war ended, and one of the things women often did during the war years was to wear socks ("anklets") with their dress shoes. It was related to the shortage of nylon for stockings and likely other reasons in rural areas. I remember distinctly the rule no bare legs or bare feet in your shoes--either stockings or anklets had to be worn. It still takes me aback some to see women in recent years dressed to the nines...and bare legs. :)

    1. Yes, I remember the rule, a female always wore something on her legs in public. You could find stockings in grocery stores, five and dime stores, drug stores, department stores but now finding a pair is getting closer to finding teeth in a hen. It is becoming rare to see young women wearing traditional stockings.

    2. And probably rare that they even know what they are! I believe even "panty-hose" is out of fashion unless it is black tights in winter.
