Wordless Wednesday - Qualls/Quarles Ladies

The photo was taken somewhere in Lincoln County, MS, during the early 1950s. Written on the back of the photo, child Phyllis Quarles, seated Ella Jones, Rubinetta Quarles, Beatrice Quarles, and Alberta White.

Found an obituary for Beatrice Qualls (1911-2011). Per the obituary she is grandmother to the child Phyllis.

  1. I love the way people always lean into a photograph and there is always so much room around. So, Ella is the great grandmother? Rubinetta is the mother of Phyllis and Alberta is another daughter?

  2. Your theory is my theory. I found another obituary which is in conflict with our theory, need the 1940 census for clarity of Beatrice's daughters.

  3. I am so glad I stopped by to see your post. This is three generations? I wonder what the occasion was. Thank you for sharing.

    1. There might be four generations. I imagine Beatrice, along with her daughter Rubinetta and granddaughter Phyllis, came by after church to visit with Beatrice's mother Ella and her sister Alberta the caregiver.

    1. Quarles is not a common surname. Most, if not all of the Quarles from Franklin, Jefferson or Lincoln County, Mississippi, descend from Barney Quarles born about 1825 in Virginia.
