A flyer found in the store reports the building is a 130 years old structure, which means it was built around the early 1880s. Country stores sold everything from sugar to a pound of nails. The building is now a restaurant serving country favorites, known best for the fried chicken.

The store is located in Lorman, Jefferson County, Mississippi, between Fayette and Port Gibson on Hwy 61.

Members of my family would be familiar with this store as this was the area they were enslaved. The store was located in Union Church, Jefferson County, Mississippi.

The store is said to have been built around 1840.
It was destroyed by fire September 08, 2004.

Country Churches of Learned, MS

My people came from communities in Mississippi, very small rural communities, which consisted of a country store, churches and homes. I imagine their community would have been similar to the village of Learned, MS. Mississippi is part of the bible belt, no matter the size of the community the major Christian denominations are represented, and so it is with Learned.

Per the 2000 census, the demographics were 50 people, 22 households, and 17 families residing in the town. The racial makeup of the town was 82.00% White and 18.00% African American. Wikipedia

Last summer, the husband and I were out for a leisure drive. We saw a street sign that read Learned. Neither one of us had been there before, so, we decided to take the road never traveled and came upon this store in a small Mayberry-ish like village. I believe the faded sign above the store reads Gibbs and Sons. The store was built in 1892 and is located in Learned, Hinds County, Mississippi. It is about 20 miles west of Jackson.
